Pilates, originally called Contrology, by it’s creator Joseph Pilates, is a system of exercise that strengthens the body as a whole instead of only working out individual parts(i.e. just the arms, chest, back or legs as done in most weight lifting routines). The core-based exercises, which can be done on a mat or various apparatuses increase overall strength and flexibility, and also focus on improving posture and increasing range of motion. The majority of the exercises involve either core stabilization and then challenging the body’s stability and/or spinal articulation. The breathing is as important as the exercises themselves and should be coordinated with the movements unifying the body, mind and energy.
Joseph Pilates had a saying “If your spine is inflexible at 30 you are old, but if your spine is flexible at 60 you are young.” The less flexible the spine is, the greater the chance for injury and back pain.
I started teaching Pilates in June of 1999 initially at the Body Awareness Studio(1999-2001) in Atlanta, GA as well as Jeanne’s Body Tech(Atlanta, GA 1999-2006).
